Four years ago the eyes of the world were fixed on east London. Danny Boyle’s opening ceremony had fired the starting gun on the 2012 Olympic Games, the cycling was under way in the velodrome, and the swimming heats were in full flow in the new aquatic centre. All these crowd-pleasing events, including the athletics held in the main stadium, took place within the grounds of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, in the borough of Newham. Historically Stratford had been considered an unglamorous location, overlooked by tourists, investors and home buyers, and overshadowed in the wider context of the capital. It was the London Olympics and the Olympic-driven regeneration that put the suburb on the map as a tourist destination and a great place to live and work.
